BICAM PENANG ROADSHOW

The Borneo International Centre for Arbitration and Mediation (BICAM), is a pivotal institution established in 2023 to provide a neutral environment for efficient and cost-effective arbitration and mediation. Housed in a state-of-the-art facility in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, BICAM is the first of its kind in Borneo. In a bid to enhance its outreach, BICAM held a roadshow in Penang on “the Current State of Arbitration and Adjudication with Views from the Penang Judiciary”. 

The first segment of the day was a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony between BICAM and the Council of Justices of the Peace, State of Penang. This was witnessed by YB Jagdeep Singh Deo (the Deputy Chief Minister II of Penang) who described it as a move towards greater cooperation and enhanced efficiency in handling business-related disputes and the implementation of economically efficient dispute resolution methods, which in turn benefits the State of Penang with their 400 MNCs and 6000 SMEs and in reducing the volume of commercial cases pending in Courts. 

The Mediation Bureau, Council of Justices of the Peace, Penang then hosted a luncheon dialogue with BICAM in the afternoon.

Later that evening, BICAM held an engaging discussion at the Indigo Restaurant at Cheong Fatt Tze Blue Mansion. Speakers of the night included Justice Dato’ Anand Ponnudurai and Justice Kenneth St James, with Mr Tan Kee Heng moderating their discussion. In the subsequent Q&A session, Mr Chia Loong Thye (RDS), Dato’ Surinder Sing (Ong & Manecksha), Mr Charanjit Singh (Penang Legal Advisor’s Office), BICAM Council members, Datuk Roger Chin and Ir. Harbans Ks and Tan Sri David Wong Dak Wah put forward questions and also chimed in with their insights on the topics of discussion.
