11 January 2025 - Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Kuching

The Inns of Court Malaysia (ICM) hosted its tenth Legal Education Series (LES) at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Kuching, on 11 January 2025.  First launched in 2018, the LES is ICM’s flagship initiative aimed at refining the skills of legal professionals while ensuring they remain current with evolving legal standards and developments.

Speaker of Session 1, Professor Dr. Jason Chuah, Dean of the Faculty of Law at Universiti Malaya, tackled some of the more pressing questions facing legal education today. His talk, titled  ‘Challenges and Evolution of Legal Education in Malaysia and Globally’ explored topics such as the changing face of legal education, whether there is a role for law schools to teach professional subjects, the role of AI in legal education and training and on teaching customary law.

Session 2 featured a distinguished panel of High Court Judges - YA Justice Datuk Dr. Lim Hock Leng, YA Justice Wong Siong Tung, and YA Justice Leonard David Shim, who shared rare and candid insights into civil litigation from the judiciary’s perspective. Drawing from their years on the Bench, the panel shed light on the common pitfalls made by counsels in Court, gave imperative advice on courtroom conduct and offered reflections that extended well beyond the standard legal curiculum.
